What is the role of the outside hitter?

The role of the outside hitter is primarily to attack and score points from the left side of the net. While blocking is essential in volleyball, outside hitters are not primarily tasked with blocking opponents’ hits, as that responsibility often falls more to middle blockers. Serving effectively is also a key component of the game; however, it is not the central focus of the outside hitter’s role. Setting up plays from the back row is typically the job of setters who create scoring opportunities for attackers.
